DRAMA

THE CURIOSITY MINDSET

Maybe learning to hold onto a curiosity mindset while sitting with mental discomfort is one of the things at the heart of being an artist - or not even of being an artist - rather of being a person with just enough headspace and desire to try and find a healthier way of exploring the world than the endless rinse and repeat of the participation in, and creation of drama.

Unfortunately, neither neat and tidy answers nor beatific happiness appear to come with the territory of that exploration, but in combination with the considered in and out breath of a pause we sometimes get to experience glimpses of something a bit more profound.

It’s a work-in-progress.

HIGH DRAMA?

One fine June day a couple of years back I looked out of the window and saw a man mending a section of the roof opposite. Thinking it made for an interesting photo, with the sea in the background and the cloudless summer sky, I grabbed my camera and started to snap away. As if he knew he had an audience, he made his way to the peak and walked along the ridge with his hands out for balance like on a tightrope. My body flooded with adrenaline and cortisol but I was not worried, I could tell he had done this before. On reaching the opposite chimney stack he resumed his work, casually collecting up broken tiles before disappearing out of sight.
