Original print showing the text 'WORK' in yellow with a blue graphic on quality textured paper

Our letter explores how we work, what percentage of our time we spend working, and how it can dominate our thinking out of proportion to the length of time we spend doing it. Some of this is surprising stuff. It then goes on to consider what we might want to do instead if we were able to disengage from our contemporary need to be 'always on', always being productive.

The original print is a lino-cut depicting a sense of work, and we have art postcards featuring a 1919 image from war photographer Olive Edis and an on-theme painting by Gustave Caillebotte.

Early 20th century photograph of a crowded indoor setting with women sitting on chairs, working.

We also enclose a Work/Sleep/Life calculator and one of the quotations in the Invitation to Wonder is from Henry David Thoreau which reads, "[...] the cost of a thing is the amount of what I call life which is required to be exchanged for it, immediately or in the long run."
